About Us

SEFHA is a Proud Supporter of The First Shift

The Fun Starts Here!

The NHL/NHLPA FIRST SHIFT
program is designed to ensure a positive experience for new-to-hockey families. We want families to experience the game at its best — to understand why so many Canadians feel an inherent love for the sport, and to stimulate a desire for continued participation. We want to take away any intimidation as it relates to equipment requirements, and/or rules of the game, remove potential safety concerns, and most importantly, provide an experience that is memorable and fun.

We Care About Your Safety.

Hockey is a fast and demanding sport

Girls' hockey, like any sport, carries certain risks, but when played with appropriate safety measures and proper equipment, it can be relatively safe. We take player safety seriously and implement rules and guidelines to reduce the risk of injuries. Here are some factors that SEFHA is cosntantly monitoring that contribute to the safety of girls' hockey:

Improved Protective Equipment:
Continual advancements have been made in the design and technology of protective gear to enhance player safety. Manufacturers have been working on creating helmets with better impact absorption and materials that provide increased protection against head injuries.

Concussion Awareness and Management:
Awareness about the seriousness of concussions and their potential long-term effects has grown significantly. Leagues, coaches, and players have been more proactive in recognizing and managing concussions, including the implementation of concussion protocols and mandatory evaluation before players return to play after a head injury.

Rule Changes:
Hockey governing bodies have been reviewing and modifying rules to prioritize player safety. This includes stricter penalties for dangerous plays, such as head hits or checking from behind, which are intended to reduce the risk of serious injuries. Note that checking is not allowed in girls' hockey.

Training and Education:
Coaches and players have access to more comprehensive training and educational resources on safety, proper techniques, and injury prevention. This helps instill a safety-first mindset and reduces the likelihood of accidents due to improper play.

Inclusion:
Everyone is welcome. We take the safety of all fans, volunteers, players, and parents very seriously. Harmful and offensive behaviour such as racism, verbal abuse, intimidation, vandalism, theft, harassment or sexual harassment, will not be tolerated. Remember that all of us are here for one main reason: to enjoy the game.

Research and Technology:
Researchers have been studying hockey-related injuries and biomechanics to gain insights into how injuries occur and how to prevent them. Additionally, wearable technology, such as smart helmets and impact sensors, is being developed to monitor and track head impacts during play.
